The new 2017 BMW 5 Series has been refreshed for the new model year. Although heavily camouflaged, our spy photographers still managed to catch some crucial details of the exterior design. As for the interior, nothing much has changed at least according to the teaser images BMW has been showcasing once in a while. Below is our rendering review according to the latest news we have of the BMW 5 Series including its release date and price. So, read on.
Last year, the BMW 5 Series caused some ripples in the midsize luxury sedan segment thanks to its myriad of interior refreshments over its immediate predecessor. Well, for 2017, the same should be expected as the new vehicle is expected to feature some of the latest there’s in technology and material quality. Some of the highlights that should be expected include high-tech gadgetry, impressive fuel economy, composed ride quality, and a high-quality interior.
But with a solid competition mounted by some of the latest, flashiest, and greatest top dogs such as Lexus GS, Infiniti Q60, 2017 Cadillac CTS/CTS-V, 2017 Audi A6/S6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the Maserati Ghibli, the aforementioned features can as well be considered stale by today’s standards. As such, the new model is expected to up its ante a bit in order to better its chances of beating its rivals hands down.
Now for 2017, the new model will make use of the CFRP technology that will result in the Bimmer losing some weight. This alone will impact positively the fuel economy ratings, better its aerodynamic coefficient, and make it nimble around corners. Niceties don’t stop there, as the new 5 Series will also come with tons of safety gizmos, and a Vision-Future-Luxury-inspired exterior design concept.
In addition to the aforementioned changes, the new model is also expected to embody a refined ride quality, and impeccable and spacious interior that will help distance itself from the hallowed models that came before it. While cynics may be quick to judge its degree of driving engagement and handling precision, the Bimmer more than makes up for that in terms of the smorgasbord of high-tech, convenience, and comfort features hosted in a voluptuous cabin.
As for the engine, based on what we’ve seen in newer BMW models, the 5 Series will most probably be offered with a slew of engines that include a new V8 engine that will offer up to 460 horsepower for the most frugal model in the lineup.
2017 BMW 5 Series Release Date & Price
A sticker price starting from an MSRP of around $50,000 should be expected, despite the myriad of improvements and a new design. As for its release date, the same sources say it is set for the second half of 2017. But of course these are just speculations.
2017 BMW 5 Series Exterior Spy pictures
According to what our renderings suggest, the new model’s exterior design will essentially be more of an evolution than a revolution. Judging from the refreshments the new-generation 7 Series got, this news shouldn’t come as a surprise but rather as a confirmation. However, BMW may have spent lots of effort on giving the new model a significant redesign on its side panels, engine hood, and front and rear fascia.
As per our 2017 BMW 5 Series spy photos, the sedan will gain slimmer and wider twin-kidney grille, revised apron vents, and a more menacing stance. Farther back, the bumper, trunk lid, and taillights will also be redesigned. New side skirts, side mirrors, and character lines should also contribute in offering the new sedan a refreshed exterior profile.
2017 BMW 5 Series Interior
We’re still light on the interior details as getting details on the heavily camouflaged BMW 5 Series has proven futile. But even so, we expect significant changes on the connectivity, safety, technology, and gadgetry front.
As of this writing, BMW had only confirmed four trims for the new 2017 BMW 5 Series: 528i, 550i, 535d, and the 535i models. Other than that, there’re also the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, BMW M5, and the 5 Series ActiveHybrid5 reviews that are separately reviewed.
As previously mentioned, it is not yet known which engines will be offered and how powerful they’ll be. However, the least powerful is expected to be a 2.0L four-cylinder cranking around 240 horsepower, while the most powerful should be a 4.4L V8 able to provide over 460 horsepower – a 15 horsepower improvement over the existing BMW 550i model.
