The standard powertrain offered exclusively for all trims is the 2.5L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder capable of generating 175 hp and 174 pounds of torque. The vehicle will use the 4WD system through the CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) system. Also provided alongside the CVT is the steering buttons that emulate a 6-speed manually shiftable transmission system whenever the driver wishes.

In our own test drive, a 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited was able to reach 60 miles per hour from standstill in a dreary 9.6 sec. Other compact rivals within its segment are significantly faster. According to EPA, the Outback has a fuel return of 25/33/28 mpg in the city/highway/combined.

The 6-cyl 2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R has an output of 256 horsepower and 247 pounds of torque, however, the extra output jeopardizes the fuel consumption. EPA estimates the values to be 20/27/22 mpg in the city/highway/combined.
